Twilight Is Unimpressed With Me by KuroiTsubasaTenshi Twilight Is Unimpressed With Me by KuroiTsubasaTenshi
Well, I decided to try some stylistic adjustment tonight, which means time to draw more Twi! She doesn't seem to be too impressed that I keep experimenting on her, though.

Anyway, the experimentation was to try to incorporate some of the advice from Sessalisk's guide ([link]) into my own technique. What I ended up taking from it was to try doing a non-textured shading job for my contour layer, then darken and add texture on the second pass. This allowed me to make the fur a little more muted, but still keep the furry look. I was playing a little bit with the form of her mane, too, although I'm always doing that, really (I think I might like detailing pony manes just a little too much, hehe).

Anyway, roughly 4 hour job using the 2H-HB-2B trio.

Very nice! It occurs to me that Twilight is somehow one of the worst ponies for you to work on as your shading becomes more detailed, since she has the "horn issue": her horn in show style slices through the mane like a flat piece of cardboard, and as you add volume to the horn, it makes that contradiction more apparent. Curious if you have thought of ways to deal with that?

Hmmm, maybe I'm not doing as good a job of it as I thought, but if you look closely at the far side of the horn, I wrapped that portion of her bangs around the backside of the horn. It wraps just enough for the corner to touch the far side of her purple streak and leaving a small gap (it's actually a bit larger than it appears, though, as the perspective made it so I had to draw the side of the layer of bangs underneath the layer we always see. Maybe I'm not giving the horn enough volume and need to have the background bangs go even further back?

Yeah, I did see that when I looked closely. It's partly an issue that the horn doesn't seem to have much effect on the near-side bangs, and partly a bit of physical implausibility that the hair would close up that way without leaving a noticeable gap below the horn.

Twi totally meticulously styles it until it works out. /copout

Seriously, though, hmmm, I'll have to toy around with the horn affecting her bangs a bit more, then. I might try leaving the big gap and seeing how that looks.
